Hospital Report 2007: Acute Care is the seventh in a series of hospital reports that uses a balanced scorecard approach to report on the performance of hospitals that provide acute inpatient and day surgery services in Ontario.
A total of 40 indicators were chosen by health care providers, managers, and researchers to examine the four important areas of acute care that form a balanced scorecard approach - system integration and change, clinical utilization and outcomes, patient satisfaction, and financial performance and condition. Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) level analyses are included in this report.
This balanced scorecard approach for acute care hospitals in Ontario builds on previous acute care reports. This report includes hospital-specific performance indicator results for 108 acute care hospital corporations in Ontario in 2005/06. Together, these corporations represent 98.5% of all acute care hospitalizations in Ontario in 2005/06. Eighty-three (83) corporations participated in all four quadrants of the report. High performing hospitals within quadrants are identified.
Technical Summaries describing the methodological approaches used to develop this report are available.
System level and hospital-specific
Three classifications are used: above average performance, average performance, and below average performance. For some financial performance and condition indicators, two classifications are used: inside range to reflect optimal performance, and outside range to reflect optimal performance.
Results are summarized by hospital, LHIN, hospital type (small, community, and teaching), and province.
