Hospital Report 2007: Emergency Department Care is the fourth in a series of hospital reports that uses a balanced scorecard approach to report on the performance of Ontario hospitals that have emergency departments or urgent care centers.

A total of 25 indicators were chosen by health care providers, managers, and researchers to examine the four important areas of emergency department activity that form a balanced scorecard approach - system integration and change, clinical utilization and outcomes, patient satisfaction, and financial performance and condition. Local Integration Network (LHIN) level analyses are included in this report.

This balanced scorecard approach describes a comprehensive measurement system for emergency department care in Ontario. This report includes hospital-specific performance indicator results for 109 of 124 hospital corporations with emergency departments in Ontario. Together, these hospitals handled 96% of all reported emergency department visits in Ontario in 2005/06. Eighty-five (85) hospital corporations participated in all four quadrants of the report. High performing hospitals within quadrants are identified.
